Earth Day 2000 Asia

While economic status in Asia rapidly grows, environmental pollution is getting serious year after year. On the other hand, people's awareness toward environmental protection is getting higher and higher.

Air Check Project (Checking NO2 pollution level in the air)

One of the most serious environmental problems in Asia is air pollution as we can see in big cities. We took up this project in order to motivate people to turn attention to our environment. This project was held simutaneously throughout Asian countries on Earth day 2000.

In addition, we made this as an opportunity to know the current air condition in Asian countries through worksheet especially NO2 as main air pollutant, CO2 as green house gas and CFC as decomposer of ozone layer.

These air check kits were purchased by so many Japanese corporations and individuals that we could deliver a lot of them to Asian countries.

This worksheet was translated into English and sent to Asian countries, too

Earth Day Bandana Project

This cloth like handerchief called "bandana", and they were made and delivered to NGOs and NPOs which participated in Earth Day 2000 Asia Project. On Earth Day 2000, they put them on their bodies to feel solidarity with other Asian people who joined different actions.

The design, logo of "Earth Day 2000 Asia" was selected among public applicants from Asian countries.

Simultaneous Bicycle Parade in Japan and Korea

At 13:00 on April 23, we had a bicycle parade simultaneously with KFEM (Korean Federation for Environmental Movement) in Tokyo, Japan and in Seoul, Korea.

Sumiko Shimizu, the chief of Environmental Agency (then) participated in the departure ceremony.

It was clear day, and as many as 500 bicycles departed with the tune of Korean traditional drums.
Bicycles departed from Hibiya Park, the site for Earth Day 2000 Tokyo, and ran through main streets at the busiest and most fashionable area, Ginza and Sukiyabashi. They occupied one car lane for the day.

Those bicycles appealled to draw attention to environmental issues such as global warming by riding environmental friendly "bicycles" which emits no green house gases.

We would like to show our deepest gratitude to the Metropolitan Police Department and Marunouchi Police Station for the their help on that day.
